The Korean Motherisk Program

Goal:

As a teratogen information center, our goal is to provide up-to-date information on the potential teratogenic effects of therapeutic and illicit drugs, over-the-counter medications, natural products, alcohol, cigarette smoking, and radiation to women of childbearing age who are planning pregnancy, or to pregnant or breastfeeding women, and to their healthcare providers.

Background:

For approximately 10 years, The Korean Motherisk Program has been providing women with preconception and prenatal teratogen-risk counselling. Our service once available only at the clinic, has now been revolutionized by introducing counselling by e-mail and more recently by telephone. In order to fulfill our vision to provide all women with the easiest form of access to our counsellors and databases, we are always in the development of new ways of improving our communication services.

Our Program is also backed by international collaborations which in turn enables us to more effectively acquire experience and expand our knowledge on the use of drugs and medications by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

MotherSafe Counselling Centers

In 2010, we envisioned a unique opportunity to reduce the gap for providing teratogen information to patients living in communities far from Seoul. Our Program extended its services through three MotherSafe Counselling Centers, funded by the Ministry for Health and Welfare.

MotherSafe Line

This is a toll-free information service which provided information about the potential teratogenicity of therapeutic and illicit drugs, alcohol, cigarette smoking, chemicals and other environmental hazards.

Service hours: Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
